Little Island Red 2021
Tasting Notes
‘little island red’ is a bright, fresh lightly oaked Shiraz showing red fruits (raspberry, cherry, black cherry) and dark fruits, along with black pepper and an overall pretty floral character. Bright, fresh, middle-weight, fine and with a great length.
Vintage
Vintage 2021 was a dream, a little bit like Baby Bears porridge; just right. We had good rains (above average) in the preceding winter, not too much heat during spring and summer, very few heat spikes during harvest and dry throughout the ripening period. Can we have another one just like 2021 for 2022 please?
Winemaking
Grapes are harvested and brought back to our Willunga winery before being crushed and fermented in open vessels. A small percentage of the Shiraz underwent a whole bunch ferment (i.e. not crushed prior to being fermented). This process highlights the red berry fruit characters of the Shiraz.
We use older French oak barrels to store the wine in, so the oak characters of the wine are minimal; which allows the fresh primary fruit characters to shine.
Reviews
Halliday Wine Companion
'A powerful, yet inherently full-bodied wine, with blackberry to the fore. Needs time, but has balance and will repay extended cellaring.'

The Wine Advocate
'this juicy little banger has a frothy fruit profile, layered with purple berries, raspberries, some licorice and red snakes, and a web of tannin that props is all up in the mouth. The oak is almost imperceptible, save for some spice and general texture. Delicious wine. Drink it young – it’s got a border-nouveau thing happening. Good.'
